First German Quadriga Eurofighter Typhoon Completes Maiden Flight in Manching
- Airbus Defence and Space flew the first Eurofighter Typhoon built under Germany's Quadriga programme, serial 34+02 (c/n GS0114), from the Military Air Systems Centre in Manching on 14 July 2026[5][6]
- The flight was a Production Flight Acceptance Test of about an hour, flown by Airbus test pilot Stefan Auer, checking flight characteristics, engines, controls, hydraulics, electrics, cockpit, navigation and communications[4][5][6]
- It shows assembly-line readiness and paves the way for Luftwaffe acceptance testing; delivery is expected later in 2026[3][4][5][6]
- Quadriga is 38 Tranche 4 jets (30 single-seat, eight twin-seat) ordered in November 2020 to replace Tranche 1 aircraft, with all delivered by 2030; sources give 38, not the 20 in the pin description[3][4][5][6]
- A further 20 Tranche 5 jets were ordered in October 2025, for 58 new-build Eurofighters in total, sustaining the fleet into the 2060s[3][4][6]
Notable features
- The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, supersonic, canard delta wing multirole fighter built by a consortium of Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo[2]
- Tranche 4 aircraft carry the ECRS Mk 1 AESA radar (initially Step 0, later Step 1) and upgraded electronic warfare; 15 of the 38 are to get Saab Arexis wingtip pods[3][4][5][6]
- The ECRS Mk 1 is the variant meant for Germany’s Quadriga, Tranche 5 and Spain’s Halcon jets; Mk 0 equips Kuwaiti and Qatari Typhoons and the electronic-attack Mk 2 is being developed for the RAF[4]
- Two Eurojet EJ200 afterburning turbofans give 60 kN dry and 90 kN with afterburner each, for a top speed of Mach 2.35 at altitude; Eurofighter states it can supercruise at Mach 1.5[2]
- Length 15.96 m, wingspan 10.95 m, maximum take-off weight 23,500 kg; a 27 mm Mauser BK-27 cannon and 13 hardpoints[2]
