  Egypt's Aswan High Dam, built with Soviet help across the Nile since 1960, was completed on 21 July 1970, creating Lake Nasser and ending the river's annual flood cycle.

  First Lady Lady Bird Johnson formally dedicated Glen Canyon Dam in northern Arizona on 22 September 1966, three years after its last concrete was poured and the river began backing up into Lake Powell.
