Australia 108 Tops Out as Tallest Residential Tower in Southern Hemisphere
- Australia 108 (formerly 70 Southbank Boulevard) is a 100-floor residential supertall in Southbank, Melbourne with 1,105 apartments, designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects for developer Aspial Corporation (World Class Land) and built by Brookfield Multiplex[2]
- Construction began in October 2015, topped out in June 2020 as the tallest building in Australia by roof height (surpassing Eureka Tower), and was completed in September 2020[2]
- Height is given as 316.7 m architecturally by Wikipedia and 319 m by Dezeen; Dezeen calls it the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere[2][3]
- A golden star (the Starburst) cantilevers six metres outward about two-thirds of the way up, informed by the Commonwealth Star on the Australian flag[3]
- Earlier plans were far bigger (2012: 388 m, 108 levels, approved March 2013 but shelved after VicRoads and CASA conditions) before the final form was approved in June 2014; cost is about AUD $900 million[2]
