Platov International Airport Opens Near Rostov-on-Don
A greenfield, $940M airport built ahead of Russia's 2018 World Cup opens outside Rostov-on-Don, engineered to be able to double its capacity later.
- Platov International Airport officially opened on 7 December 2017 with a Pobeda Boeing 737-800 flight from Moscow-Vnukovo, near Grushevskaya in Rostov Oblast[2][3]
- It replaced the old Rostov-on-Don airport, is named after Cossack general Matvei Platov (name officially set 20 January 2017), and was described as Russia's most expensive airport at the time[3]
- Facilities include a 3,600 m runway, a 50,000 m2 terminal with 9 air-bridges, and a design capacity of 5 million passengers a year[3]
- Test flights ran on 18 November 2017 and the IATA code ROV moved to Platov on 27 November[3]
- In its first year it handled over 3.23 million passengers and added 20 new destinations; during the 2018 World Cup Rostov matches it carried 257.8 thousand passengers[2][3]
- It was built as a public-private partnership with Airports of Regions (Renova Group) as strategic shareholder, the largest infrastructure project of the Rostov Region[2]
- Civilian flights have been suspended since 24 February 2022 and the airport remained closed for security reasons as of late 2025[3]
