Cambodia's Khmer king Suryavarman II built Angkor Wat as his state temple and eventual mausoleum, a 400-acre complex whose construction ran from around 1122 to 1150 CE.

The brewhouse on Křemencova has been dated to 1499, which makes it one of the oldest continuously trading beer halls anywhere. It brews its own dark lager on the premises and has done through five centuries of changing states, serving it in a warren of rooms off a courtyard.

Venice's Baroque votive basilica, its foundations built on more than a million driven wooden piles in the lagoon mud, is consecrated by Patriarch Alvise Sagredo. The city still marks the day every November 21st as the Festa della Salute.

Floriano Francesconi opened his coffee house under the arcades of Piazza San Marco in 1720, making it one of the oldest cafés in continuous business anywhere. It admitted women when other Venetian cafés did not, which is how Casanova came to be among its regulars, and its orchestra still plays to the square.

Den Gyldene Freden opened in Stockholm's old town in 1722, named for the peace that ended the Great Northern War, and has served from the same vaulted cellars ever since - long enough to be cited as the oldest restaurant still trading in its original premises. The Swedish Academy has lunched there on Thursdays for generations.

Botín has been serving on Calle de Cuchilleros since 1725, which the Guinness Book of Records recognises as making it the oldest restaurant in the world still trading. It was founded by the French cook Jean Botín and his Asturian wife, passed to a nephew - the sobrino of the name - and still roasts suckling pig in the same wood-fired oven, which has reportedly not been allowed to go out.

Port'Alba began in 1738 as a street stall selling pizza to passers-by and took premises as a sit-down pizzeria a century later, which is the claim behind its billing as the world's first pizzeria. It still bakes in a wood oven lined with Vesuvian stone, on the street of booksellers under the old city gate.

A magnitude 7.7-or-greater earthquake struck off Cape St. Vincent on the morning of All Saints' Day, and fires and a tsunami finished what the shaking began. Between 30,000 and 40,000 died in Lisbon alone.

Antico Caffè Greco opened in 1760 a few steps from the Spanish Steps and became the room where the Grand Tour sat down - Keats, Byron, Goethe, Stendhal and Casanova among the names attached to it. It is the oldest cafe in Rome, and has spent recent years fighting its landlord in court over the rent on the premises it has occupied for more than two and a half centuries.

Demel was established in 1786 a few steps from the Hofburg and became confectioner to the imperial court, a title it still puts on its boxes. Its window on the Kohlmarkt and its Anna Torte made it one of the fixtures by which Vienna measures its café culture, and it sits at the centre of a long argument with Hotel Sacher over who may call a cake a Sachertorte.

At the Round Foundry in Holbeck, Leeds, engineering firm Fenton, Murray and Wood built the Salamanca, the world's first commercially successful steam locomotive, which first ran publicly on 24 June 1812. Designed by Matthew Murray for John Blenkinsop's rack-and-pinion Middleton Railway, it hauled coal using a toothed rail system.

The most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history threw 37-45 cubic kilometres of rock into the atmosphere from Sumbawa. Its veil of ash cooled the planet enough to give 1816 the name the Year Without a Summer.

The oldest restaurant still operating in the United States opened on 7 October 1826 as the Atwood & Bacon Oyster House, in a Union Street building already old at the time. Its semicircular oyster bar is the original, and Daniel Webster is said to have worked through brandy and oysters at it daily.

Café Kranzler opened on Unter den Linden in 1834 and became the Berlin coffeehouse. Destroyed in the war, it was rebuilt on the Kurfürstendamm, where its red-and-white striped rotunda survives as a listed landmark of West Berlin's reconstruction.

Antoine Alciatore opened his restaurant on 3 April 1840 in the French Quarter, and it has been run by his descendants ever since - the oldest family-run restaurant in the United States. Oysters Rockefeller were invented in its kitchen, and the recipe has never been published.

The Bewley family began dealing tea in Dublin in 1840, having broken the East India Company's grip on the trade by shipping direct from China, and the cafés followed. The Grafton Street room, with its Harry Clarke windows and open fires, became the city's front parlour.

On April 16, 1853, the Great Indian Peninsula Railway ran the first passenger train in India and Asia, carrying about 400 guests roughly 34km from Bombay's Bori Bunder to Thane.

With more than 500 dead in ten days around Golden Square, John Snow persuaded the parish to remove the handle from the Broad Street water pump. He had mapped the deaths house by house and found them clustered on one well - the argument that cholera travelled in water, not air.

Washington's oldest saloon dates itself to 1856 and has moved premises more than once, ending up a block from the White House. Its oyster bar and dark wood booths have fed enough administrations that the taxidermy over the bar is said to have been shot by Theodore Roosevelt.

The coffeehouse on Vörösmarty tér opened in 1858 and grew into one of the largest and grandest in Europe, its rooms panelled and chandeliered on a scale that belongs to the Habsburg city. It gave its name to the Gerbeaud slice and remains the fixture by which Budapest's café tradition is measured.

John Murray issues the first edition of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection from 50 Albemarle Street in London. The print run of 1,250 copies is taken up by the trade on the day of publication.

Tai Ping Koon was established in 1860 serving Western food to Chinese diners, and in doing so more or less invented the genre Hong Kong calls soy-sauce Western - Swiss chicken wings in a sweet soy braise, baked pork chop rice, souffle to finish. It began in Canton and became a Hong Kong business alone when the Canton branch was confiscated and closed in 1956.

The Metropolitan Railway opened between Paddington and Farringdon on January 10, 1863, the world's first underground railway and the ancestor of every metro system shown in Moving Millions Every Day.

Quanjude opened in 1864 and made its name on a method: hanging the ducks in an open oven over fruitwood rather than closing them in, which crisps the skin differently. The dish it standardised is the one the world now calls Peking duck, and the carving at the table is part of it.

During the 1867 Exposition Universelle, Paris opened Baron Haussmann's newly rebuilt sewer network to public tours for the first time, turning Eugène Belgrand's engineering into a civic showcase.

Dmitri Mendeleev's paper The Dependence between the Properties of the Atomic Weights of the Elements is read to the Russian Chemical Society in St Petersburg, arranging the known elements by atomic weight and valence and leaving gaps for elements not yet found.

Leopold Cafe was founded in Colaba in 1871 by Irani immigrants, part of the wave of Zoroastrian cafes that shaped how Bombay eats out, and has outlasted almost all of them. It became a fixture for travellers along the Causeway, and was one of the sites attacked in November 2008 - it reopened days afterwards and kept the bullet marks in its walls.

New York's Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public, completing a 13-year construction effort that Emily Warren Roebling steered to completion after her husband was incapacitated by decompression sickness.

The third explosion of 27 August 1883 destroyed over 70% of the island and remains the loudest sound in recorded history, audible in Perth and near Mauritius. The eruption and its tsunamis killed at least 36,417 people.

The Forth Bridge, a railway cantilever spanning the Firth of Forth in Scotland, was formally opened by the Prince of Wales on 4 March 1890, some months after the structure itself was finished in November 1889. Designed by John Fowler and Benjamin Baker and built by Sir William Arrol & Co., it was Britain's first major all-steel structure and the world's longest cantilever bridge span.

Henry Zietz opened the Buckhorn Exchange on 17 November 1893 across from the rail yards, and it holds Colorado liquor licence number one. The walls carry several hundred mounted animals and the menu still runs to elk, buffalo and rattlesnake.

Confeitaria Colombo opened in 1894 and fitted itself out like a Parisian tea room transplanted to the tropics - Belgian mirrors, Italian marble, a jacaranda counter and a stained-glass skylight over the hall. It became the meeting room of Rio's belle epoque and is now listed as heritage.

The café that became the meeting room of Catalan modernisme opened on 12 June 1897 in the Casa Martí, a Puig i Cadafalch building in the Gothic Quarter. It lasted only six years in its first run, but in them it hosted Picasso's first solo exhibition and the circle around Rusiñol and Casas - and he drew its menu card.

Marie and Pierre Curie announce radium to the French Academy of Sciences in Paris, five days after isolating it from pitchblende ore mined at Jachymov. It is the second element they identify that year, after polonium.

The house that made xiaolongbao a Shanghai export was established in 1900, selling the thin-skinned soup dumplings that had been developed in Nanxiang town on the city's edge a couple of decades earlier. Queues for them became a fixture of the old city, and the name is now on branches across Shanghai and abroad.

Theatercaféen opened in 1900 across the street from Oslo's National Theatre and became the room where Norwegian actors, writers and politicians ate after curtain - a Viennese-style café with a gallery, caricatures of its regulars on the walls and live music from a balcony.

Orville Wright flew 120 feet in 12 seconds over the sand at Kill Devil Hills, the first sustained flight by a manned, powered, controlled heavier-than-air aircraft. The brothers flew four times that day; Wilbur’s fourth and last covered 852 feet in 59 seconds.

Swan Oyster Depot opened on Polk Street in 1903 and has run more or less continuously since, pausing only to rebuild after the 1906 earthquake. It is barely a restaurant - a marble counter with about eighteen stools, no tables, no kitchen to speak of - and has been run by the same family for generations, serving the same short list of cold shellfish.

The East Indian Railway brought its new Howrah terminus, designed by Halsey Ricardo, into service across the Hooghly from Kolkata, replacing the original 1854 station building. Its North Wing's six platforms were built to absorb traffic that had grown sharply since the Bengal-Nagpur Railway opened its Calcutta Extension Line into Howrah in 1900.

Adriano Telles opened A Brasileira in 1905 to sell Brazilian coffee by the sack, gave cups away to persuade Lisbon to drink it, and ended up with the café that the city's writers colonised. Fernando Pessoa sits in bronze at a table outside it.
