On 14 July 1978 United Airlines ordered 30 Boeing 767-200 twinjets worth US$1.2 billion, giving Boeing the launch customer for its first twin-aisle twinjet. United bundled it with 30 727-200s in a package then billed as the largest single transaction in commercial aviation.

The first Boeing 767-200, N767BA, flew for the first time on 26 September 1981 from Everett, Washington, seven weeks after its rollout. It began a ten-month flight-test program that used the first six aircraft built.

The FAA approved the Boeing 767-200 under Type Certificate A1NM on 30 July 1982, ten months after first flight and three weeks before the first delivery to United Airlines.

On 19 August 1982 Boeing handed the first 767 (N606UA, ninth off the line) to United Airlines at its Everett plant. United put it into service on 8 September as flight UA1767 from Chicago to Denver.

The FAA approved the stretched Boeing 767-300 on 22 September 1986, adding about 21 feet of fuselage and roughly 45 two-class seats to the 767-200. Its extended-range 767-300ER version became the best-selling 767.

American Airlines introduced the extended-range Boeing 767-300ER into service on 3 March 1988, two weeks after taking the first delivery (N351AA) on 19 February, launching what became the best-selling 767 version.

The first Boeing 767-400ER, VQ001, lifted off from Paine Field at 12:10 p.m. on 9 October 1999 for a five-hour test flight to Boeing Field. The longest 767 had been launched in April 1997 with a 21-aircraft Delta order.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg announced on 11 October 2024 that Boeing will stop building the 767 freighter in 2027 after filling its remaining 29 orders, ending the airliner line at Everett. The 767-2C tanker for the KC-46A will continue beyond 2027.
