On 12 June 2018 Thurrott reported, from documents Brad Sams viewed, that Microsoft targeted Q1 2019 for a next-generation HoloLens codenamed Sydney[1][4][5]
It came after Microsoft reportedly stopped HoloLens V2 development about a year earlier and pushed toward a "V3"[1][5]
It was unclear whether Q1 2019 meant general availability or a developer preview[1][5]
Microsoft views mixed and virtual reality as a must-win market, competing with Google, Magic Leap and others[1][4][5]
The device became HoloLens 2, announced by Alex Kipman on 24 February 2019 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at $3,500 and released in limited numbers on 7 November 2019[3]
