The next generation Xbox was codenamed Scarlett and in an effort to track down if this information was accurate, I was able to view content that highlighted several unannounced Microsoft products that are coming in the next two years. Microsoft is planning for the next Xbox console release to arrive in 2020. But what is more interesting, is that Microsoft describes ‘Scarlett’ as a family of devices; meaning we may see multiple pieces of hardware released that year.

Thurrott.com (12 June 2018) reported, from internal content its author viewed, that Microsoft planned its next Xbox, codenamed 'Scarlett', for 2020, and described it as a family of devices^[1]
The report hedged that 'timing and plans can change'; it was unclear whether Scarlett was all-new hardware or a more powerful, backward-compatible Xbox One^[1]
Days earlier at E3 2018, Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirmed a next Xbox was in development and hinted at a cloud streaming service^[7]
On 12 December 2019 at The Game Awards Microsoft revealed Project Scarlett as the Xbox Series X, launching holiday 2020^[2][5]
