Crews finished carving three enormous caverns a mile beneath a former South Dakota gold mine to house the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment.

On 15 August 2024 a ribbon-cutting at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota marked completion of excavation of the LBNF/DUNE caverns, led by DOE's Fermilab with the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority^[2][3]
