US Navy Commissions Holland as Its First Submarine
- USS Holland (SS-1) was the first submarine of the US Navy, designed by Irish-American engineer John Philip Holland[2][3]
- Built as Holland VI at the Crescent Shipyard in Elizabeth, New Jersey, for the Holland Torpedo Boat Company (Electric Boat from 1899); laid down November 1896 and launched 17 May 1897[3]
- The Navy acquired her on 11 April 1900 and commissioned her on 12 October 1900; she was decommissioned in 1905[3]
- About 64 ft long, with a gas engine on the surface and an electric motor submerged, ballast and trim tanks, and one 18-inch torpedo tube[3]
- Holland (1841-1914) also developed the Royal Navy's first submarine, Holland 1, and held US Patent 702,729[2][3]
