Hong Kong Reports First Local Chikungunya Case of 2026
- On 17 September 2026 Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection (CHP) reported the year's first locally acquired chikungunya case: a 55-year-old woman living on Li Tak Street, Tai Kok Tsui, with no travel during the 26 August-5 September incubation window.[1][2]
- She developed fever, headache and joint pain on 7 September, then a facial and body rash, and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 16 September in a mosquito-free room; her condition was stable.[1][2]
- Investigators think she was bitten at home and around Cherry Street Park and Lok Kwan Street Park; her one household contact has no symptoms.[1]
- The city has three cases in 2026 (one local, two imported) against 82 in 2025 (11 local, 71 imported), so local transmission is now a pattern rather than a first.[1][2]
- CHP opened a hotline (2125 2373), a health consultation booth at the Tai Kok Tsui Municipal Services Building from 18 September, and sent alert letters to doctors, hospitals and schools.[1]
- Advice is to use DEET repellents (up to 30%), eliminate stagnant water, keep drains clear and report mosquito problems to 1823.[1]
