The prototype DHC-8 Dash 8-100, registered C-GDNK, flew for the first time on 20 June 1983, launching the twin-engine 37-seat turboprop that replaced the four-engine Dash 7 concept.

De Havilland Canada delivered the first production Dash 8-100, C-GJCB, to launch customer NorOntair on 23 October 1984, a month after Canadian type certification.

The original Dash 8 prototype, rebuilt with an 11 ft 3 in fuselage stretch and 2,380 shp PW123 engines, flew for the first time as the 56-seat Dash 8-300 on 15 May 1987.

The stretched 70 to 78-seat Dash 8 Q400 flew for the first time on 31 January 1998, three years after the programme launch, with 5,071 shp PW150A engines and a 360-knot maximum cruise.

On 17 February 2021 De Havilland Canada said it would build no new Dash 8-400s at Downsview beyond confirmed orders, affecting about 500 employees, as the plant lease ran out in 2021.
