Xbox Project Helix Next-Generation Console Launch

• Microsoft's next-generation first-party console is Project Helix, announced by Jason Ronald, VP Next Generation, in his Xbox Developer Summit keynote at GDC on 11 March 2026^[4]
• Microsoft has given no release date for the console itself; what it has committed to is that “we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027”^[4]
• The 2027 launch talk comes from AMD rather than Microsoft: CEO Lisa Su told the Q4 2025 earnings call that “development of Microsoft's next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027”^[1][3]
• Windows Central reports that Microsoft insiders “were a little taken off-guard by Lisa Su's comments” and that Microsoft “hasn't fully internally committed to a hard 2027 launch window”, since much depends on improvements to Windows 11: “You can think of 2027 as the 'best case scenario'”^[1]
• That article also contradicts itself, one line referring to accessories arriving “even before the next Xbox launches later this year” against the 2027 window it gives everywhere else^[1]
• AMD's internal codename for the Xbox SoC is “Magnus”, which is not Microsoft's codename for the device^[1][3]
• Those leaked figures are said to exceed the PlayStation 6, reportedly at 52-54 RDNA 5 CUs on a 160-bit bus with up to 40GB of RAM^[3]
• Pricing is unsettled: “Microsoft itself doesn't know how much the next-gen Xbox will be just yet”, with tariffs, component costs, spiralling RAM prices and supply issues in play, though it is “pushing for a more premium experience” and some expect around $1,000^[1]
• Microsoft is working with OEMs such as ASUS on a range of next-gen Xbox hardware at different price points, positioning its own console as “a curated boutique experience in a wider Xbox hardware ecosystem”, comparable to how it handles Surface, and still wants to make a first-party handheld eventually^[1]
• Around the same GDC announcement, Xbox mode began rolling out to Windows 11 in select markets from April, the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog passed 1,500 games from 500 development teams, and Epic said it is ready to bring the Epic Games Store to the next Xbox^[1][4]

Notable features

• The console runs on a custom AMD SoC under a multi-year partnership with AMD, co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR, with Microsoft “using FSR Next to power what comes next”^[4]
• Microsoft claims “an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability”, intelligence integrated “directly into the graphics and compute pipeline”, and gains in efficiency, scale and visual ambition^[4]
• Leaked “Magnus” specifications attributed to leaker Moore's Law is Dead — not confirmed by AMD or Microsoft — give 68 RDNA 5 compute units (cut down from up to 70), at least 24MB of GPU L2 cache, up to 3 Zen 6 plus 8 Zen 6c CPU cores with 12MB of L3, a 192-bit bus with up to 48GB of GDDR7, an NPU rated up to 110 TOPS at 6W or 46 TOPS at 1.2W, a 144mm² SoC plus 264mm² GPU totalling 408mm², and an estimated 250-350W TDP^[3]
• Project Helix is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games”, and Windows Central describes it as essentially a full Windows machine running a TV-first console interface by default, from which players can exit to full Windows much as a Steam Deck exits to Linux^[1][4]
• Backward compatibility is part of the pitch: Xbox President Sarah Bond said the next-gen console would retain compatibility with all current Xbox console games, and Xbox commits to “keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come”^[1][4]
