The 2028 Summer Paralympics, branded LA28, will be the 18th edition of the Summer Paralympic Games, governed by the International Paralympic Committee and “scheduled to take place from August 15 to August 27, 2028, in Los Angeles, California, United States”
They will be Los Angeles’ first Paralympics, the first Summer Paralympics in the United States since Atlanta 1996 and only the third overall; the previous summer edition was Paris 2024 and the next is Brisbane 2032
The opening ceremony is at SoFi Stadium, which is called “2028 Stadium” during the Games, and the closing ceremony on 27 August at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where the pin sits
The Coliseum will also host athletics for both the Olympics and Paralympics, and will become “the first stadium to have hosted the Summer Olympics three times” in 2028, having staged the 1932 and 1984 Games; its current capacity is 77,500 after the 2018-2019 renovation cut about 16,000 seats, down from 93,607
The venue is a National Historic Landmark on a 29.2 acre site at 3911 South Figueroa Street in Exposition Park, opened 1 May 1923 as a memorial to Los Angeles veterans of World War I, jointly owned by the State of California, Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles and operated by the University of Southern California under a 98-year master lease implemented in July 2013
Its Olympic cauldron, built for 1932 and reused in 1984, has been lit for the venue’s own milestones since May 1, 2023 on the first of each month, and was lit on the evening of 13 September 2017 “while Los Angeles awaited confirmation as host of the 2028 Summer Olympics”
Los Angeles got the Games through the twin award of 2024 and 2028: the process was approved at an Extraordinary IOC Session on 11 July 2017 in Lausanne, the IOC named Los Angeles sole candidate for 2028 on 31 July 2017, and both decisions were ratified at the 131st IOC Session on 13 September 2017; the Paralympics follow automatically under a formal IPC-IOC agreement first established in 2001
The programme is a record 560 events in 23 sports, up 11 events and one sport on 2024, keeping the 22 sports contested in Paris and adding sport climbing (paraclimbing) for its Paralympic debut; 4,400 athletes are expected
Paraclimbing was chosen as the 23rd sport in June 2024 after a record 33 sports applied – including bids to reinstate CP football and sailing and new bids from arm wrestling, beach paravolley, para dance sport, golf, karate, powerchair football, para surfing and wheelchair handball – with the IPC shortlisting paraclimbing and para surfing for the LA28 organizing committee
IPC president Andrew Parsons said LA28 would be the most gender-balanced Paralympics in its history: 12 more women’s events (a record 247) and three more mixed or open events than 2024, four fewer men’s events, and a record 17 sports at full gender parity, six more than 2024
Athletics is the largest sport at 164 events, followed by swimming (142), cycling (51) and table tennis (32), with climbing making its debut at 8
The venue plan was announced on 3 June 2025 and reuses most of the Olympic venues, but SoFi Stadium will not host swimming as it does for the Olympics because the Los Angeles Chargers and Rams need it for NFL preseason games; Paralympic swimming moves to a temporary stadium on the grounds of the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, a decision some Paralympic athletes called an inequity between the Olympics and Paralympics
The organizing committee published a first competition schedule on 19 November 2025, and the IPC approved the final schedule and released the dates on 27 May 2026
The published calendar runs 13-27 August 2028, two days before the Games’ stated 15 August start, with the first three days carrying no medal events; the daily medal counts as listed sum to 565 in the table’s own total row while the cumulative row ends at 560, the figure the article and infobox both give
The emblems for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics were unveiled on 1 September 2020, stacking the characters “LA” and “28” with an interchangeable “A”; the variant suite includes designs made with Paralympic athletes Scout Bassett (inspired by the infinity symbol), Ezra Frech, Lex Gillette, Jamal Hill and Oz Sanchez

Something missing or wrong? Say it in your own words: a link that backs this pin up, a different start or end date and why, or a fact it lacks or gets wrong. The AI checks it against this pin's sources, searches for better ones, and adds any page that backs you up. The pin's own sources still count most. A picture that shows something else, or shows it badly, is looked at too, and moved down or replaced.
