Boston Marks Evacuation Day's 250th Anniversary on Dorchester Heights

Reenactors, cannon fire and a mounted Washington marked 250 years since the British left Boston, at a newly restored Dorchester Heights Monument rededicated by the National Park Service.

The National Park Service held the 250th commemoration and a national rededication of the Dorchester Heights Monument after a multi-year preservation effort^[1]
Reenactors formed up at St. Augustine's Chapel in South Boston and marched with drummers, pipers and the crew of USS Constitution to Telegraph Hill^[3]

The event was organised by the South Boston Citizens' Association and the National Park Service, and was marked with cannon fire, musket volleys and war cries^[2]
On 5 March 1776 Washington's army fortified the heights with Henry Knox's Ticonderoga guns; about 11,000 British soldiers and 1,200 Loyalists sailed away on 17 March, ending a 332-day siege^[4]
