Michael Jackson Biopic 'Michael' Opens in Theaters
Antoine Fuqua's musical biopic stars Michael Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson as the pop icon, tracing his life from childhood through his early solo career.
- Antoine Fuqua's Michael, written by John Logan, follows Michael Jackson from the Jackson 5 in the 1960s to the Bad World Tour in the late 1980s[3]
- Jaafar Jackson plays his uncle in his film debut, with Colman Domingo as Joseph Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine[3]
- Premiered 10 April 2026 in Berlin; UK release 22 April and US release 24 April 2026 via Lionsgate, with Universal handling international distribution[3][4]
- Reshoots in June 2025 followed the discovery of a legal settlement clause, removing references to the 1993 allegations and revising the third act; the budget is put at $155-200 million[3]
- Critics were generally negative, praising Jaafar's performance but calling the story sanitized[3]
- Grossed $1.021 billion worldwide, the first biopic to reach $1 billion; a sequel is in development[3]
