Aerotelegraph[1]: "Offiziell wurde das Programm aber erst am 5. Juni 1987 gestartet" (the A340 was developed in parallel with the A330); Flight International's 2019 A330neo flight test says the pair "was formally launched in June 1987". Airways dates Air Inter's A330 order to 12 March 1987, an order rather than the programme go-ahead.Airbus formally launched the A330 twinjet and the four-engine A340 on 5 June 1987, two long-range airliners sharing one fuselage cross-section, one wing family and one fly-by-wire cockpit. The A340-300 would fly first, in October 1991.
