Xiaomi's board approved a smart electric vehicle business on 30 March 2021, with an initial investment of 10 billion yuan and about US$10 billion planned over ten years under CEO Lei Jun.

At a three-hour technology launch on 28 December 2023 Xiaomi unveiled the SU7 sedan and said it wants to be a top-five global carmaker within 15-20 years; pricing was held back.

Xiaomi Auto's international website says it will 'officially' come to Europe in 2027, and president Lu Weibing has said overseas expansion should begin formally in the third or fourth quarter of 2027, with Germany first.
