Mexico's AIFA-Pachuca Passenger Train Starts Running
The third stage of the Mexico-Pachuca "Felipe Angeles" train runs 65 km of electrified double track from the AIFA airport terminal in the State of Mexico to Pachuca in Hidalgo, with stations at AIFA, Xaltocan II, Tizayuca-Temascalapa, Jaguey de Tellez and Pachuca plus four intermediate stops, and is meant to carry over 100,000 passengers a day in 1 hour 15 minutes end to end. The Felipe Angeles Engineers Corps of the defence ministry began construction in March 2025 and reported 37.06 per cent overall progress in June 2026.
- The AIFA-Pachuca stage is the third of the Mexico-Pachuca "Felipe Angeles" passenger train, "spanning 65 km of electrified double-track, which will feature four stations and four train stops", connecting the Felipe Angeles International Airport in the State of Mexico with Pachuca in Hidalgo[1]
- The route is split 35 km in the State of Mexico and 30 km in Hidalgo, laid on existing right of way, and will link with the Buenavista-Lecheria-AIFA branch to connect Mexico City with both the airport and Pachuca[1]
- The page contradicts itself on the scheme's size: a video note from the 24 April 2026 construction supervision says "There will be six stations from AIFA to Pachuca, covering a 5 km stretch", against the four stations and four stops over 65 km given in the project description and the key characteristics[1]
- Estimated investment is 44 billion MXN, with required infrastructure of "2 viaducts (5.89 km), 4 electrical substations, 51.67 km of cut-and-fill works"[1]
- Rolling stock will be electric trains with a maximum design speed of 120 km/h and a capacity of 718 passengers per train; the April 2026 supervision note says "It will feature 15 electric trains; the first one will arrive in September", and a May 20 note repeats that the first AIFA-Pachuca train arrives "in September of this year"[1]
- Construction is led by the Secretaria de la Defensa Nacional through the Felipe Angeles Engineers Corps; preliminary works and studies began in October 2024 and construction officially commenced in March 2025, with an "execution period and start of operations: 2 years (2025-2027)"[1]
- Reported progress runs from right-of-way acquisition at 66% (Oct. 22, 2025) and five heavy-construction fronts generating more than 9,000 jobs (Dec. 4, 2025) through 21.15% complete (Feb. 19, 2026) and 30% with 10,000 jobs (Apr. 24, 2026) to 37.06% (Jun. 25, 2026)[1]
- On 25 June 2026 President Claudia Sheinbaum said "We are well ahead of schedule; the goal is to inaugurate the Mexico City-Pachuca and Mexico City-Queretaro routes in 2027"[1]
- A press release of 24 April 2026 is headed "'Felipe Angeles' Train, on its AIFA-Pachuca Stretch, to Transport 107,000 Daily Passengers"[1]
- The preceding stage is already running: the Buenavista-AIFA section opened on 26 April 2026, covering 41 km in "less than 60 minutes" through six stations and the AIFA-Clara Krause terminal, with 100-metre coupled trains carrying 719 passengers each (over 1,400 coupled), a 120 km/h maximum and a 15-minute frequency[1]
- Its ridership is given several ways on the same page: "Over 206,000 Passengers During Its First Week of Operation" (May 4), "over one million passengers" (Jun. 15) and "over two million passengers" from 26 April to 30 June 2026, while a video caption says the Lecheria-AIFA train "transports 30,000 passengers daily" against a press release headed "Buenavista-AIFA Train to Transport 57,000 Daily Passengers"; a caption also puts the Mexico City-AIFA trip at "50 minutes" where the text says under 60[1]
- The first stage was the acquisition of the Suburbano Train from Buenavista to Cuautitlan, announced in April 2026 as a purchase of "100% of the equity stake" to be operated publicly through Fonadin via a new State-Owned Majority-Interest Company; that line opened in 2008 and recorded 45.1 million users in 2025, though the page describes it both as "27 km across seven stations" and as "25.5 km ... five stations ... and two terminals"[1]
- The wider programme sits inside "Plan Mexico", with a Fonadin assignment title modified on 16 July 2026 "for the construction, operation, and provision of suburban and interurban passenger services on the Buenavista-Pachuca rail route", and Sheinbaum pledging at least 2,377 km of public railways[1]
- Related work includes relocation compensation - Sedatu, SICT and Conavi delivering 28 homes to families living near the AIFA-Pachuca project (Aug. 17, 2026) - and more than 28 million square metres cleared for railway right-of-way[1]
- The page warns that "This information is preliminary and subject to review and continuous updates as the project progresses" and gives its last revision only as September 2026[1]
