Chornobyl NPP Accepts Novarka's New Safe Confinement Into Operation
- On 8 November 2017 the Enclosing Perimeter of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) was accepted into operation at Chornobyl NPP; NOVARKA handed over the NSC on 10 July 2019 and trial operation began 24 April 2020[2]
- The arch has a 257 m span, 108 m height and 162 m length; the contract with NOVARKA (VINCI and Bouygues) was signed 10 August 2007[2][3]
- It was slid 327 m into position over Reactor 4's 1986 shelter, completed 29 November 2016[2][3]
- It is the largest moveable land-based structure ever built, weighing 36,000 tonnes equipped, with a 100-year lifetime[3]
- Cost was EUR 1.5 billion, funded by 45 donor countries and Ukraine through the EBRD-managed Chernobyl Shelter Fund[2][3]
- Gamma radiation in the former arch construction zone fell about 10 times, and it enables dismantling of unstable structures and retrieval of radioactive material[2]
