US Ban on Canadian Alcohol Imports Takes Effect
- From 12:01 a.m. eastern time on 29 September 2026, the Canadian alcoholic beverages listed in Proclamation 11061's annex are excluded from importation into the United States[1]
- The proclamation says Canada reneged on a commitment on 21 August, that the 50% duties took effect on 22 August, and that Saskatchewan then announced its own 50% levy on US alcohol from 8 September[1]
- Goods already imported but not yet entered before 29 September stay subject to the 50% duty, which also applies instead if the ban is invalidated[1]
- The ban covers Canadian spirits, wine and malt beer, all of which had carried the 50% tariff since the breakdown of talks in August[5]
- A same-day proclamation re-scoped the products that remain under the 50% duty from 15 September[4]
- US alcohol trade groups have pressed for a deal, saying US spirits exports to Canada fell from US$232 million to US$72 million between March and December 2025[3]
- The ban is estimated to cover about $19.9 billion of Canadian imports (American Action Forum, via CNBC); Canada has announced no fresh retaliation since 9 September, and USTR Jamieson Greer said there is "no urgency on our side"[2]
