Micron provides updates on GDDR5X and GDDR6 development
- On 5 June 2017 Micron said GDDR5X, launched at 10Gbps, was now supplied at 10, 11 and 12Gbps, and that 16Gbps had been tested on a meaningful sample of mass-production silicon[1][4]
- Nvidia's Titan Xp uses Micron GDDR5X at 11.4Gbps in mass production[1]
- Micron expected GDDR6 mass production early in 2018, at an estimated 12-14Gbps at launch, using an FBGA180 package with increased pitch and a dual-channel architecture[1][4]
- In December 2017 Micron said GDDR6 design and device qualification were complete, with mass production in early or first half of 2018 and initial speeds of 12 and 14 Gb/s, 16 Gb/s to follow[3]
- Micron began mass production of 8 Gb GDDR6 chips in June 2018[2]
- Demand was cited from PC and console gaming, professional visualization, HPC and data centers, and autonomous vehicles, continuing to 2020 and beyond[1]
Notable features
- GDDR6 is the JEDEC graphics memory standard, finalized in July 2017, that succeeds GDDR5 for graphics cards, game consoles and high-performance computing, offering up to 16 Gbit/s per pin at 1.35 V for more performance and lower power than GDDR5X[2]
- Micron's GDDR6 starts at 12Gbps against GDDR5X's 10Gbps and splits each chip into two channels with half as many I/O links (x8/x16 per channel versus x16/x32 on GDDR5X), which PC Perspective said could allow higher clocks and simpler wiring for card makers[4]
- GDDR5X, the JEDEC standard bridging GDDR5 and GDDR6, launched at 10 Gbps and quickly hit 12 Gbps; Micron's Munich graphics design team reached 16 Gbps in its high-speed test environment, measured with a PRBS11 read pattern on an oscilloscope[4]
References 477% CONFIDENCE
The first entry is always the pin's source. Overall confidence is a weighted average of how firmly each reference supports the start and end times used above; a reference counts half as much for every 180 days older than the newest.

Something missing or wrong? Say it in your own words: a link that backs this pin up, a different start or end date and why, or a fact it lacks or gets wrong. The AI checks it against this pin's sources, searches for better ones, and adds any page that backs you up. The pin's own sources still count most.
