Eli Lilly Becomes the First Drugmaker Worth $1 Trillion
- On Friday 21 November 2025 Eli Lilly became the first drugmaker to reach $1 trillion in market value, and the second US non-technology company after Berkshire Hathaway to do so.[1][3]
- Shares hit a record intraday high of $1,066.65 and closed at $1,059.70, up from $1,043.29 the day before.[4]
- On the 945,383,757 shares Lilly reported outstanding on 27 October 2025, that close is worth about $1.002 trillion, so Lilly finished the day above the mark; the previous day's high of $1,057.00 had fallen just short.[4][5]
- The stock had risen more than 35% in 2025 and traded at about 50 times expected earnings, on demand for tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound), which overtook Keytruda as the world's best-selling drug.[2]
- Mounjaro brought in $6.52 billion and Zepbound $3.59 billion in the third quarter of 2025, up 109% and 184%, while rival Novo Nordisk's shares had fallen nearly 45% that year.[3]
- At $1 trillion Lilly was worth two thirds of Meta, more than Walmart, and more than twice Johnson & Johnson, its closest pharma peer.[1]
