Microsoft officially increases free OneDrive space to 15GB for everyone
- On Thursday 17 July 2014 Microsoft "turned on the switch" and expanded free OneDrive storage from 7GB to 15GB for everyone with a free Microsoft Account, for documents, photos and videos[1]
- The increase had been announced on 23 June 2014 on the Microsoft 365 Blog but not implemented at the time; that post said the changes would take effect "in the next month" and that current subscribers would be moved automatically[1][3]
- Microsoft's stated reason for the 15 GB figure: "3 out of 4 people have less than 15 GB of files stored on their PC"[3]
- Standalone paid tiers at the same time are $1.99 a month for 100GB and $3.99 a month for 200GB[1][3], prices cut by over 70% from $7.49 and $11.49[3]
