Loy Krathong Floats Its Lights on Bangkok's Chao Phraya on 25 November
- Loy Krathong is on Wednesday 25 November 2026, the evening of the full moon of the twelfth month of the Thai lunar calendar[1]
- The name means "to float a basket": a krathong is a small float of banana leaf shaped like a lotus or a boat, decorated with flowers, candles, incense and coins[1]
- The 800-year-old tradition began in the Sukhothai Kingdom and blends Hindu and Buddhist customs, honouring the water goddess and Buddha and letting go of the past year's negativity[1]
- In Bangkok people release krathongs along the Chao Phraya River and at Wat Arun, Wat Saket, Wat Pariwat and Wat Yannawa, with river cruises and the riverside Asiatique complex[1]
- In Chiang Mai the festival coincides with Yi Peng, when sky lanterns are released for luck and to let go of worries[1]
