Intel has just patched a vulnerability which has been open and exploitable in all its enterprise targeted Core processors - for the last nine years. Since 2008 Intel's business-focussed PC processors have shipped with Active Management Technology (AMT), Intel Standard Manageability (ISM) and Small Business Technology (SBT) features - all useful features for remote management.
Intel patched a critical privilege-escalation flaw (CVE-2017-5689, nicknamed Silent Bob) in the AMT, ISM and SBT remote-management firmware of its business Core processors, present since 2008[1][2][3]
It affects firmware versions 6.x through 11.6 and lets an unprivileged attacker take control of the manageability features; Intel says consumer PCs are not affected[1][2]
It was reachable by anyone on the same network, or remotely if port 16992 was exposed[1][2]
Maksim Malyutin of Embedi discovered it and reported it to Intel in the first quarter of 2017; The Register puts it in March and CyberScoop in February[2][3]
Fixed firmware ranges from 6.2.61.3535 (1st-gen Core) to 11.6.27.3264 (7th-gen Core), but manufacturers must distribute it; Lenovo and HP planned patches the following week, other timetables ran deep into June, and unsupported machines may never be fixed[1][2][3]
SemiAccurate criticised Intel's slow response and suspected exploitation in the wild, while Intel said it was not aware of any exploitation[1][2]
Intel released a mitigation guide (Intel-SA-00075) and a discovery tool to check for the flaw[1][3]

Intel and AMD are joining forces to produce new 8th-Generation H-Series Intel mobile processors paired with stacked second-generation High Bandwidth Memory and custom-built discrete graphics from AMD. For the new H-Series chips, which feature all of the above listed components in a single processor package, Intel says is using its Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB), a power-sharing framework that reduces the standard silicon footprint to less than half that of standard discrete components on a motherboard. This is the first consumer product that takes advantage of EMIB.
