Carr's Opens Its Carlisle Biscuit Works, Later Home to McVitie's
- Jonathan Dodgson Carr founded a small bakery and biscuit factory in Carlisle in 1831; it received a royal warrant in 1841 and within 15 years became Britain's largest baking business[2]
- Carr combined mill and bakery, making biscuits based on dry ship biscuits and shipping them by canal and railway; by 1885 the firm made 128 varieties with 1000 workers[2]
- Since 1972 the factory has been part of United Biscuits, officially McVitie's but still known locally as Carr's; United Biscuits is now within pladis[2]
- The Caldewgate factory flooded in 2005 and on 6 December 2015, the latter closing works for a month[2]
