Krupp's Schwerer Gustav Railway Gun Bombards Sevastopol
- Schwerer Gustav, Krupp's 80 cm railway gun, weighing 1,350 tonnes and 47.3 m long, was commissioned in 1934-37 to destroy Maginot Line forts but was not ready for the Battle of France[2][3]
- Attached to Schwere Artillerie-Abteilung (E) 672 (1,420 men), it fired its first round at Sevastopol on 5 June 1942 (14 shots that day)[3]
- On 6 June it hit an ammunition magazine buried about 30 m under Severnaya Bay; 48 shells were fired in total, only 10 landing within 60 m of the target; Sevastopol fell on 4 July 1942[2][3]
- Shells: 4.8 t high explosive to 47 km, 7.1 t armour-piercing to 38 km, at 14-16 rounds a day; 250 men needed 54 hours to assemble it, with 2,500 more laying track and two flak battalions[2][3]
- It was later moved to Leningrad and destroyed by the Germans in 1945; it is the largest-calibre rifled weapon used in combat, and only one was fired[2]
