Polio Programme Targets Wild Poliovirus Eradication Certification by End-2027
- The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) extended its 2022-2026 strategy to the end of 2029, and the Polio Oversight Board's timelines put certification-track eradication of wild poliovirus type 1 at the end of 2027 and of type 2 variant poliovirus at the end of 2029.[1][3]
- Afghanistan and Pakistan are the last two countries where wild poliovirus type 1 still circulates, while circulating vaccine-derived type 2 outbreaks continue in other countries as well.[1]
- The extension came with a revised budget of US$6.9 billion for 2022-2029, up from the US$4.8 billion planned for 2022-2026; only about US$4.6 billion had been secured or pledged, leaving a gap of roughly US$2.3 billion.[1][2]
- The setback was driven by 2024, when Afghanistan reported 23 wild cases and Pakistan 63, and by environmental surveillance that found 741 positive samples across the two countries.[2]
- Funding is under extra strain from reduced US engagement: the GPEI chair estimated about US$233 million a year in lost support, in a programme where the US has historically supplied about 22.6% of money since 1988.[2]
- Pakistan's 2026 numbers show why 2027 is hard: five wild cases so far this year, four of them in Bannu division, against 31 in 2025, with transmission still persistent in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
- Access is the other obstacle: Afghanistan restricts door-to-door vaccination, and conflict in places such as Yemen, Gaza and Sudan creates conditions for the virus to spread.[2]
