Ever since Microsoft decoupled the Kinect sensor from the Xbox One, the one lingering question was when would they sell it as a stand-alone unit? Offering an Xbox One without the Kinect sensor made financial sense in Microsoft's struggle against Sony, but it does not mean that people may never want to want to buy the Kinect at a later point. Until now though, there was no option to do so. Windows Phone Central has now learned that Microsoft is planning to sell the stand-alone Kinect sensor for $149 beginning on or around October 6. The timing is ideal as it leads well into the holiday season in the US and other countries, making the add-on an excellent gift for those who already own an Xbox One without the next-gen accessory.

Windows Phone Central first learned that Microsoft planned to sell the stand-alone Kinect sensor for Xbox One at $149 "beginning on or around October 6"; Microsoft's own announcement the same day, 27 August 2014, settled it at $149.99 "with a slight date change to October 7"^[1][3][4]
The sensor is sold at retailers and comes with a code to download Dance Central Spotlight, the new Harmonix game, as a digital download with 10 tracks^[1][3][4]
GeekWire notes the $149.99 price is $50 cheaper than the Kinect for Windows^[4]
Until this point there was no way to buy the sensor separately after Microsoft decoupled Kinect from the console; the report frames the timing as leading into the holiday season for people who already own an Xbox One without it^[1]
Background on the split: Microsoft launched the $399 Kinect-less Xbox One on June 9, $100 below the original $499 Xbox One with Kinect bundle, after which Xbox One sales doubled while demand for the Xbox One with Kinect also rose; GeekWire adds that the PS4 had outsold the Xbox One in the U.S. for the past seven months and that Kinect-less bundles starting at $350 would follow later in the year^[1][3][4]

Notable features

The Kinect for Xbox One, first released with the console on November 22, 2013, uses a wide-angle time-of-flight camera, processes 2 gigabits of data per second and can track without visible light using an active IR sensor^[2]

Its colour camera captures 1080p video, and its microphone takes voice commands for navigation, starting games and waking the console from sleep^[2]
Xbox Wire lists what the sensor buys: voice and gesture controls, biometric sign-in, instant personalization, QR code scanning, games such as Kinect Sports Rivals, Dead Rising 3 and Project Spark, commands like "Xbox On", "Xbox Broadcast" and "Xbox Record That", plus Twitch, Game DVR, Bing voice search, Skype video calls and TV control over HDMI-In^[3]

The next generation Xbox was codenamed Scarlett and in an effort to track down if this information was accurate, I was able to view content that highlighted several unannounced Microsoft products that are coming in the next two years. Microsoft is planning for the next Xbox console release to arrive in 2020. But what is more interesting, is that Microsoft describes ‘Scarlett’ as a family of devices; meaning we may see multiple pieces of hardware released that year.
