Austerlitz Basin Opens to Clean Up the Seine for the Olympics · Chronopin

On 2 May 2024 officials inaugurated the Austerlitz wastewater and rainwater storage basin in Paris, built to help make the Seine the venue for Olympic marathon swimming and the swimming leg of the triathlons^[3]
The basin holds the equivalent of 20 Olympic swimming pools of dirty water, which is treated rather than spilling into the river; the IOC's later account puts that at "over 50,000 cubic metres, roughly twenty Olympic pools" - the same volume stated two ways^[2][3]
It was built because swimming test events the previous year had been cancelled over poor water quality after heavy rain overwhelmed the old sewers^[3]
Prefect Marc Guillaume at the inauguration: "We are on time"; Mayor Anne Hidalgo promised to swim in the Seine herself before the Olympics^[3]
During the Games water would be tested at 3 a.m. daily, with events liable to be delayed a few days if standards were not met^[3]
The wider cleanup was estimated at 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion), paid by state and local authorities - the same figure the pin's video source headlines as "Paris' $1.5BN cleanup plan"^[1][3]
A water treatment plant at Champigny-sur-Marne had been inaugurated the month before^[3]
Context: swimming in the Seine has been banned since 1923 over pollution, cleanup efforts date to the early 90s, and in 2015 the Greater Paris Sanitation Authority announced the plan to make the river swimmable by the Games, which accelerated work already in progress; about 35 fish species now live in the Paris section, up from three in the 1970s^[2][3]
The payoff came the next year: three natural swimming sites at Bras Marie, Bercy and Grenelle opened on 5 July 2025, just over a year after the Olympic events, taking about 1,000 swimmers a day until the end of August, with lifeguards, showers, sun decks, kayaks at Grenelle, daily water testing and removable modular structures, and more spots planned along the Seine and Marne^[2]
