Rastatt Tunnel Goes Into Operation on the Karlsruhe-Basel Line
- The Rastatt Tunnel on the Karlsruhe-Basel line is planned to enter service at the end of 2026, with the Rheintalbahn relocated back in 2027[1][2][3][4]
- It has two single-track tubes totalling 4,270 m, running from Otigheim to Niederbuhl under the town of Rastatt, with a top speed of 250 km/h and 15 kV overhead power[1][4]
- On 12 August 2017 the eastern-tube tunnel boring machine was entombed after concrete segments shifted under the Rheintalbahn, and DB closed the line above before reopening it in October 2017[1][4]
- The eastern tube was then rebuilt by cut-and-cover: demolition of the east-tube ceiling and removal of the machine from spring 2024, and shell construction completed by summer 2025[1][3][4]
- DB switched on the 15,000 V overhead line on the new line in two stages, on 4-5 June 2026 up to Bietigheim and on 10-11 June 2026 for the section to Rastatt Sud including the tunnel, as a step toward operation at the end of the year[2]
- Remaining fit-out as of September 2025 included slab track, overhead line, signalling, lighting and communications, followed by technical inspections, safety drills with rescue services and test runs[3]
- The Karlsruhe-Basel project is co-financed by the European Union[2]

Estimated: the project page lists "Ende 2026: Inbetriebnahme Tunnel Rastatt" and DB says it aims to open the line "by year's end", so it is dated to 31 December 2026.

Something missing or wrong? Say it in your own words: a link that backs this pin up, a different start or end date and why, or a fact it lacks or gets wrong. The AI checks it against this pin's sources, searches for better ones, and adds any page that backs you up. The pin's own sources still count most. A picture that shows something else, or shows it badly, is looked at too, and moved down or replaced.
