Proposition D, a labor-backed rise in San Francisco's tax on companies whose top executives earn 100 times their workers, projected at about $300 million a year, failed 52.8% to 47.2%; its business-backed rival, Measure C, lost 66% to 34%.

The regional transit district certified an estimated 235,503 valid signatures, above the 205,831 needed, putting a 14-year sales tax for BART, Muni, Caltrain and AC Transit (1 cent in San Francisco, half a cent in four other counties) before voters on 3 November.

San Francisco's November 3 ballot carries ten lettered city measures, from Mayor Lurie's executive-branch and contracting initiatives to a public bank, a Muni parcel tax and cars on the Great Highway, plus supervisor races in Districts 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.

Voters in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties decide a 14-year sales tax (1 cent in San Francisco, half a cent elsewhere) for BART, Muni, Caltrain and AC Transit; BART and Muni have drawn up station closures and route cuts if it fails.
