Downtown San Diego's COASTER Platform Opens · Chronopin

NCTD is building a new COASTER station in downtown San Diego parallel to Harbor Drive near the Gaslamp Quarter and the San Diego Convention Center, extending the line from its existing terminus at Santa Fe Depot to the waterfront^[1][3]
The centrepiece is an 850-foot platform running from First Avenue to Fifth Avenue "with the capacity to accommodate eight passenger cars", sited between two existing MTS Trolley stations - Wikipedia names them as the adjacent Convention Center and Gaslamp Quarter stations^[1][2][3]
The project also reconfigures the existing BNSF track and adds a new siding, or pocket track, "to allow greater service frequencies"^[1][2]; the Union-Tribune describes the same work as adding "a second rail track in part of downtown - making it easier for freight trains to travel through the area from the Port of San Diego to Los Angeles"^[3]
Supporting work includes extension of railroad signalling and dispatching, signal upgrades at five grade crossings (Kettner Boulevard, Market Street, Front Street, First Avenue and Fifth Avenue), switch and signal upgrades at Broadway, and new pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure at First and Fifth^[1][3]
The station gives "a one-seat ride from Oceanside to Petco Park, the San Diego Convention Center, the Gaslamp Quarter, The Rady Shell, and other downtown destinations", sparing riders a near-mile walk, a trolley transfer or a car from Santa Fe Depot^[1][3]
The project costs $33 million for design and construction and is fully funded, drawn from the $106 million grant NCTD received from the California Transportation Commission in December 2020 for LOSSAN corridor improvements^[1][3]; Wikipedia adds that the funding came partly from a Trade Corridor Enhancement Program grant derived from Road Repair and Accountability Act revenues and partly from BNSF^[2]
NCTD has a design-build project management contract with BNSF, which takes the lead on construction, alongside the city, the Port of San Diego and San Diego Gas & Electric^[1][3]
The links disagree sharply on the schedule. NCTD's own project page - the oldest of the three - says design was "planned to be completed in April 2025", construction "expected to start in fall 2025", and the station "anticipated to be open to passengers in early 2027"^[1]
The newer February 2026 reporting supersedes that: NCTD officials said they now plan to break ground "by the end of this year" and have the station "operating by late 2027 or early 2028", having delayed a hoped-for spring 2026 groundbreaking to analyse relocating utilities between Harbor Drive and Tony Gwynn Drive^[3]
CEO Shawn Donaghy: "It is unlikely that construction will start in spring of 2026, as these utility reviews are critical to the project. While we are hopeful that the project will be complete in 2027, it is more likely at this point that it will be late 2027 to early 2028"; any delay in agreeing utility relocations "would delay groundbreaking"^[3]
Wikipedia, also as of February 2026, keeps a spring construction start - "construction on the Downtown Platform is scheduled to begin in the spring. After 18 months of construction, the station will likely open in late-2027 or early-2028" - while its infobox still gives an opening of 2027 and it files the station under "Railway stations scheduled to open in 2027"^[2]; the Union-Tribune's account of the delayed groundbreaking is the more specific and authoritative of the two^[3]
Construction is expected to last about 18 months^[2][3]
The station will have one side platform and two tracks, will be accessible, is owned by NCTD on the BNSF San Diego Subdivision, and will be the COASTER terminus with Santa Fe Depot the preceding stop toward Oceanside^[2]
NCTD argues the station "will improve passenger and freight operations along the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) corridor, which is the second busiest intercity rail corridor in the country", as one of a group of TCEP projects whose "primary benefit ... is increased freight frequencies"^[1]
The extension "is expected to boost ridership beyond the 871,000 it had in 2024"; the COASTER currently has eight stations along its 41-mile route, and an extension to the Convention Center "has been an ambition of NCTD since shortly after the Coaster began running in 1995", with formal efforts starting only in 2020^[3]
Reaction: the Gaslamp Quarter Association's Michael Trimble said "More convenient rail access gives people a real alternative to driving downtown", while advocacy group RideSD said the extension "should go hand-in-hand with improved hours and frequency"^[3]
