Estimate from the variant's published specs, 0-5; scores are only comparable within one criteria year. MD-81 (JT8D-200, MTOW 140,000 lb). Range 1,800 nmi with 137 passengers (Wikipedia table from MD-80 airport-planning data) = 0.5. Capacity 143 two-class (12J+131Y) = 2. Speed: long-range cruise Mach 0.76 = 2 (high-speed cruise 0.80 would give 2.5). Runway: 7,200 ft is the lower bound of the 7,200-8,000 ft quoted for the -81/82/83/88 at MTOW (a read-from-graph range) = 4. Comfort null: the four reviews describe the cockpit and handling, not cabin comfort. Efficiency null: no published fuel-burn figure for this variant was found (airport-planning manual has none; operator pages checked give only fleet-level savings). Two of the four reviews are by one author (JetHead).[2]
That’s the 737 compared to the MD-80: no aileron boost on the -80, and little help from the powered rudder
She was lethargic and clumsy in the roll axis and the actual control wheels in the cockpit were cartoonishly large to give pilots more leverage against the lethargic ailerons.
If you ever get a chance to talk to a pilot who has flown the MD-80, they will tell you that it is a “pilot’s airplane.”
Having this type of hands-on control is preferable for some pilots.

November).
