Microsoft has announced that it will lay off up to 18,000 workers in the next year, in what is by far the largest number of employees that will be cut by the company in its history. In a letter sent to employees earlier this morning that Microsoft also released to the public, company CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that 12,500 of the job losses will be due to the company's acquisition of Nokia's Devices and Services division in April, when it added 25,000 new workers.

Ever since Microsoft decoupled the Kinect sensor from the Xbox One, the one lingering question was when would they sell it as a stand-alone unit? Offering an Xbox One without the Kinect sensor made financial sense in Microsoft's struggle against Sony, but it does not mean that people may never want to want to buy the Kinect at a later point. Until now though, there was no option to do so. Windows Phone Central has now learned that Microsoft is planning to sell the stand-alone Kinect sensor for $149 beginning on or around October 6. The timing is ideal as it leads well into the holiday season in the US and other countries, making the add-on an excellent gift for those who already own an Xbox One without the next-gen accessory.

On 6 July 2026 Microsoft told employees it was eliminating around 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of its global workforce, mostly in its Commercial and Xbox organisations; chief people officer Amy Coleman wrote that the roles "are not being replaced by AI"^[1][3].
In the commercial business the cuts build on the previous week's Frontier Company announcement, which embeds Microsoft's engineers alongside customers^[1]; TechCrunch reports that unit is backed by a $2.5 billion investment^[3].
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma called it "the most significant restructure in XBOX history": about 3,200 fewer roles through fiscal 2027, roughly 20% of the division, 1,600 of them that day^[2][5].
Sharma wrote that Xbox operates at margins 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses and, in a typical year, lost 64 cents for every dollar it invested in studios^[2][5].
Compulsion Games and Double Fine return to independence with their IP, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs go to new owners to finish Senua and State of Decay 3, and Arkane in France begins works-council consultation; no publicly announced first-party game is cancelled^[2][5].
Helen Chiang becomes Xbox's first chief operating officer with end-to-end P&L across content, hardware, platform and services, Dave McCarthy retires, and management layers fall from as many as 14 to no more than five^[2][5].
Microsoft says more than 30% of eligible employees took its voluntary retirement program and it redeployed over 4,000 people into new roles in the past year^[1]; its shares fell nearly 23% in the first half of 2026^[4].
