Atlassian Central Tops Out as the World's Tallest Hybrid Timber Tower

The 39-storey, 180-metre tower beside Central Station reached its full height at a topping-out ceremony, making it the world's tallest hybrid timber and steel building. Co-owned by Atlassian and the property group Dexus, it anchors Sydney's Tech Central precinct and is expected to be completed in 2027.

A topping-out ceremony was held at the Atlassian Central skyscraper in Sydney's CBD on the Wednesday, on the building's 39th storey, marking construction reaching its full height^[1]
The tower is described as the world's tallest hybrid timber structure at 180 metres^[1]
Construction began on the site beside Central Station in 2022 and was estimated to cost $1.4 billion; the tower is expected to be completed in 2027^[1]
The hybrid timber design "also reduced the use of carbon-intensive concrete and steel", and the building has a six-star Green Star target^[1]
It is co-owned by Atlassian and commercial real estate firm Dexus, with Atlassian set to occupy about half the site; the lower five floors will house a 500-bed "co-living" hostel operated by YHA Australia^[1]
The ceremony followed Atlassian cutting nearly 500 jobs from its Australian workforce in March to invest in artificial intelligence and enterprise sales; co-CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes said that had not reduced the need for floor space and expected "even more, I suspect, collaboration spaces, meeting spaces"^[1]
Cannon-Brookes said that by opening the building would combine "advanced structural engineering, environmental design, intelligent controls, and a modern data platform, all wired together and working the building with one smart, intelligent system", making it "the most technologically advanced building in Australia"^[1]
The tower anchors the state government and City of Sydney push for a "Tech Central" precinct in the Haymarket-Redfern area; NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey called it an "engineering marvel"^[1]
