Boeing 767-400ER Makes Its First Flight at Everett
The first Boeing 767-400ER, VQ001, lifted off from Paine Field at 12:10 p.m. on 9 October 1999 for a five-hour test flight to Boeing Field. The longest 767 had been launched in April 1997 with a 21-aircraft Delta order.
- Boeing 767 chief pilot Buzz Nelson and first officer John Cashman, the flight-crew-operations director, flew VQ001 from Paine Field west down the Strait of Juan de Fuca, landing at Boeing Field after 5 hours 5 minutes[1][5]
- Program manager Pat Shanahan called it "as good as it gets"; Boeing planned a six-and-a-half-month, roughly 800-flight-hour test campaign for three aircraft, but the program ended up at 1,150 flight hours after a 40-day strike and a roll-off fix[1][3]
- The 767-400ER was launched in April 1997 with a 21-aircraft order from Delta (orders totalled 54 by first flight) and rolled out in August 1999[1]
