The FAA certificated the Boeing 747 on 30 December 1969 after about 10 months of flight testing, clearing the first widebody jetliner for airline service. Pan Am's first revenue flight followed on 22 January 1970.

The FAA approved the Boeing 767-200 under Type Certificate A1NM on 30 July 1982, ten months after first flight and three weeks before the first delivery to United Airlines.

The FAA approved the Boeing 757-200 on 21 December 1982 after an engine-icing problem found in testing pushed the schedule back a month. Eastern Air Lines took its first 757 the next day and started service on 1 January 1983.

The FAA approved the stretched Boeing 767-300 on 22 September 1986, adding about 21 feet of fuselage and roughly 45 two-class seats to the 767-200. Its extended-range 767-300ER version became the best-selling 767.

European airworthiness authorities jointly certified the A320 in February 1988, dated 26 February 1988, clearing the first fly-by-wire airliner for airline service.

The US FAA and Europe's Joint Aviation Authorities certified the Boeing 777-200 on 19 April 1995, ten months after its first flight and about a month before the first delivery.

The FAA issued the Embraer ERJ-145 its type certificate on 10 December 1996, eleven days after Brazil's CTA, and Continental Express took the first aircraft that month.

On 12 December 2006 EASA and the FAA handed Airbus the A380 type certificates at a ceremony in Toulouse, ten months before the first delivery. It was the first large aircraft certified by EASA.

The FAA and EASA certified the Rolls-Royce-powered 787-8 on 26 August 2011 at a ceremony in Everett, clearing the way for first delivery. Certification came nearly two years after first flight.

On 16 January 2013 the FAA ordered U.S.-registered 787s to stop flying after battery failures on a Japan Airlines jet in Boston and an ANA jet in Japan. It was the first time the FAA had grounded an airliner type since 1979.

Three months after the grounding, the FAA on 19 April 2013 approved Boeing's redesigned 787 battery system, including a new steel enclosure, clearing the fleet to return to service once retrofitted. Ethiopian Airlines flew the first 787 passenger service on 27 April.

The A350-1000 received type certificates from both EASA and the FAA on 21 November 2017, less than a year after its first flight and after more than 1,600 flight-test hours on three aircraft.

On 28 February 2018 Embraer's E190-E2 received its type certificate from ANAC, the FAA and EASA at once, 56 months after launch, clearing the first E2 for delivery to Widerøe.

The FAA issued an Emergency Order of Prohibition on March 13, 2019 grounding the 737 MAX 8 and 9 three days after Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed, joining regulators worldwide in a 20-month grounding.

FAA Administrator Steve Dickson signed an order on November 18, 2020 rescinding the 737 MAX grounding and published an airworthiness directive requiring the design changes before the 737-8 and 737-9 could carry passengers again.

The FAA certified the Boeing 737 MAX 10, the largest and last member of the 737 MAX family, on October 20, 2026, issuing an amended type certificate and clearing Boeing to begin deliveries with WestJet first.

As of 21 October 2026 the 777-9 is still in FAA type-certification testing: ETOPS flight-test approval is on hold over a GE9X engine mid-seal issue, and the FAA Administrator has said he hopes certification comes early in 2027.
