Second Gotthard Road Tunnel Due to Complete

Switzerland's second bore under the Gotthard Pass, approved by referendum in 2016 to let the original 1980 tunnel close for renovation without cutting off the A2, is on track to finish by 2030.

Two tunnel boring machines began excavating the second Gotthard road tunnel tube on 14 February 2025, with 'Paulina' launched at Airolo and a second machine at Goeschenen^[2][3]
