The first DC-10-10, N10DC, flew from Long Beach to Edwards Air Force Base on 29 August 1970 in a 3 hour 36 minute flight, reaching 300 knots and 30,000 feet on the first widebody trijet's first outing.
- Project pilot Clifford L. Stout and deputy chief engineering pilot Harris Van Valkenburg flew N10DC with flight engineer John Chamberlain and test engineer Shojun Yukawa; the 3 h 36 min flight reached 300 kn and 30,000 ft to check basic flying qualities, systems and test equipment[1]
- The rollout had been on 23 July 1970; the test fleet then flew 929 flights and 1,551 hours, and the FAA type certificate followed on 29 July 1971[3][4]
- American Airlines had announced its intent to buy the DC-10 on 19 February 1968 in a bid to pre-empt the rival Lockheed L-1011 TriStar[2]
- The first DC-10 later entered commercial service with American in August 1972, flew until 1994 and was converted to an MD-10 for FedEx before being scrapped in 2002[1]
- Production ran from 1970 to 1988 with 386 DC-10s built, 122 of them DC-10-10s[1]
