Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd said about 1,000 own-brand products, some two-thirds of the range, would carry the same brand names by the end of 2020, ending six decades of separate labels.

Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd announced that most private labels in the standard range and among promotional items would be identical by the end of 2020^[1].
About 1,000 products, roughly two-thirds of the range, were affected; Aldi Süd would take over Aldi Nord brands and vice versa in a roughly even split^[1].
Some products only get new packaging, while other segments get a new brand look, new varieties and partly new recipes; about a third of the range, especially regional products, stays different^[1].
Until then the chains sold, for example, toilet paper as Solo (Nord) and Kokett (Süd) and orange juice as Sonniger and Rio d'Oro; only a few brands such as Kokett and Moser Roth were already shared^[1].
The companies expected cost savings from shared recipe development, packaging and marketing and promised permanent and temporary price cuts on a sizeable number of products^[1].
The two chains have been separate companies since Karl and Theo Albrecht split the business in 1961^[1].
Aldi Nord still lists private-label harmonisation among the steps it takes jointly with Aldi Süd^[2].
