Tesla Recalls Nearly 3 Million Cars in China Over Hard-to-Find Door Releases
- Tesla filed a recall with China's State Administration for Market Regulation, published on 21 August 2026, covering 2,975,910 cars: 973,156 China-built Model 3s, 1,956,713 China-built Model Ys and 35,590 imported Model 3s, 8,328 Model Xs and 2,123 Model Ss - its largest-ever recall in China[1][3]
- The regulator found the interior emergency mechanical door release too close in colour to the trim to find and use when a severe crash cuts low-voltage power[1][3]
- The fix is a free warning label at the release plus an over-the-air update that lowers the windows after a crash; the recall runs from 25 September 2026, and Tesla said stickers can be fitted within three years[1][2][3]
- The same day Tesla (Shanghai) recalled 2,740,642 China-built Model 3s and Model Ys made between 4 March 2019 and 7 December 2025 to add cabin-camera driver-attention monitoring by OTA[3]
- Eight other carmakers, including Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Xpeng and Geely, filed recalls for the same issue; China's new door-handle safety standard takes effect on 1 January 2027[1][3][4]
- In the US, NHTSA denied a defect petition on the door releases in July but opened rulemaking, and Tesla faces wrongful-death suits blaming its door handles[1]

Something missing or wrong? Say it in your own words: a link that backs this pin up, a different start or end date and why, or a fact it lacks or gets wrong. The AI checks it against this pin's sources, searches for better ones, and adds any page that backs you up. The pin's own sources still count most. A picture that shows something else, or shows it badly, is looked at too, and moved down or replaced.
