MacRumors reported on Monday 22 September 2014 that, per Taiwan's Commercial Times, Apple planned to introduce the next-generation iPad Air in October, with the device entering production in September and shipping the following month^[1]
The same report said the next-generation Retina iPad mini might not launch alongside it, coming instead in early 2015, with a 12.9-inch iPad Pro in the second quarter of 2015 - MacRumors noting there had been "no prior indication of separate launch timelines" and that earlier rumors had both launching together at an October event^[1]
Both were expected to gain an A8 processor, camera improvements and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, with the iPad Air 2 also possibly gaining an anti-reflective screen coating and gold, silver and space gray finishes^[1]
A rumored October 21 media event had been "shot down" by The Loop's Jim Dalrymple, who did not rule out another October date, and Bloomberg was reported as saying the iPad Air 2 was already in production with the Retina iPad mini 2 entering production soon^[1]
The event in fact came on Thursday 16 October 2014 in Cupertino, where Apple introduced both the iPad Air 2 and an iPad mini 3 together - so the Commercial Times' early-2015 timing for the small iPad did not hold^[2][3]
Pricing and availability: iPad Air 2 from $499 (16GB Wi-Fi) up to $829, iPad mini 3 from $399 up to $729, the iPad mini with Retina display renamed iPad mini 2 from $299 and the original iPad mini at $249; online orders opened Friday 17 October in 29 countries with stores following the next week^[2][3]
CBS framed the launch against weak demand - Apple "sold 13.3 million iPads last quarter, down from the previous year and below Wall Street estimates", with the iPad's share sliding "from 68 percent of the tablet market at beginning of 2012, to about 27 percent last quarter" per IDC - and noted that despite Apple's secrecy the iPad details "had been widely reported", with Apple prematurely posting photos of both devices on the iTunes website the day before^[2]

Notable features

The iPad Air 2 was 6.1 mm thin and under a pound, pitched by Apple and Schiller as "the thinnest tablet in the world"^[2][3]
The chip was the A8X rather than the plain A8 the rumor expected: Apple gave the iPad Air 2 "40 percent better CPU and 2.5 times the graphics performance of iPad Air", up to 10-hour battery life and an M8 motion coprocessor with a new barometer^[2][3]
The rumored anti-reflective coating was real - an improved fully-laminated Retina display with an anti-reflective coating that "reduces glare by 56 percent over the previous iPad Air", which Phil Schiller called "a first for a tablet"^[2][3]
Cameras and connectivity: an 8MP iSight with panorama, time-lapse, slo-mo and 1080p - "For the first time on an iPad, you can take time lapse and slo-motion video" - a FaceTime HD camera capturing over 80 percent more light, 802.11ac MIMO Wi-Fi up to 866 Mbps and more LTE bands, shipping with iOS 8.1^[2][3]
The gold, silver and space gray finishes and the Touch ID sensor both arrived as rumored, on the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3 alike, together with Apple Pay within apps (US only)^[2][3]
