Estimate from the variant's published specs, 0-5; scores are only comparable within one criteria year. Variant: original 747-100 (JT9D-3, MTOW 735,000 lb). Range 3 from 4,620 nmi at that weight (Wikipedia 747 overview; interpolation 2.75, rounded up). Capacity 4.5 from about 350-365 seats in three-class layouts that airlines planned (FAA history cited in the pin, ESC Monroney News). Efficiency, speed, runway null: no fuel-burn, typical-cruise Mach or Boeing takeoff-field figure opened for the -100. Comfort 3 (competent): reviews describe a smooth cruise and a loud takeoff roll; thin evidence.[2]
THE HUGE PLANE made most of the smooth flight at 33,000 feet.
The takeoff roll was intense. Like a race car taking off down the highway. And as if gravity disappeared we lifted off the ground.
The early ones were underpowered and noisy in the cockpit, which has left me a bit deaf, but having four engines, and 16 main wheels left plenty of room if something went wrong with any of them.

Recounts the 1966 launch order and the 1968 rollout leading up to certification.[1]
"On December 30, 1969, the FAA certified the Boeing 747"; also gives the 1,400 flight hours on five aircraft.[1]
A chief engineer's account says the formal Approved Type Certificate was issued on 31 December 1969.[1]
