The Bell X-1 Breaks the Sound Barrier Over the Mojave

Captain Chuck Yeager, drop-launched from a B-29 over the Mojave Desert, took X-1 #46-062 "Glamorous Glennis" to Mach 1.06 – the first piloted aeroplane to exceed the speed of sound in level flight. It was XS-1 flight number 50.

The first manned supersonic flight took place on 14 October 1947 over the Mojave Desert, less than a month after the U.S. Air Force was created as a separate service.^[1]
Captain Charles "Chuck" Yeager flew aircraft #46-062, nicknamed Glamorous Glennis for his wife.^[1]
The aeroplane was drop-launched from the bomb bay of a B-29 and reached Mach 1.06, about 700 mph.^[1]
After the engine burned out it glided to a landing on the dry lake bed; this was XS-1 flight number 50.^[1]
Britain had pursued the same goal with the turbojet-powered Miles M.52, cancelled in February 1946 with a first flight expected that summer.^[1]

Notable features

The X-1 was a joint NACA–U.S. Army Air Forces–U.S. Air Force research project built by Bell Aircraft, and the first of the X-planes.^[1]
Bell chose rocket power over turbojets, and shaped the X-1 like a .50-calibre machine-gun bullet, known to be stable in supersonic flight, with the pilot behind a sloped, framed window in the nose and no ejection seat.^[1]
Its Reaction Motors XLR11 four-chamber rocket burned ethyl alcohol diluted with water with liquid oxygen; each chamber could be switched on or off, giving up to 6,000 lbf (27 kN) of thrust and about five minutes of powered flight.^[1]
On NACA’s advice the elevator was mounted on an adjustable horizontal stabilizer, so the whole tailplane could be moved to deal with large trim changes in transonic flight.^[1]
It was 30 ft 11 in (9.42 m) long with a 28 ft (8.53 m) wingspan, and weighed 7,000 lb (3,175 kg) empty and 12,250 lb (5,557 kg) gross.^[1]
