Microsoft announced on 23 June 2026 that its first datacenter in the Village of Mount Pleasant is complete and fully operational, after equipment came online and startup began in April^[1][3]
Brad Smith said that with Fairwater running, "Wisconsin is now home to the world's most powerful supercomputer"; the claim rests on Microsoft's self-reported AI-training throughput, and Fairwater is not on the TOP500 list^[1][2]
Announced in May 2024, it finished ahead of schedule (about 6.5 weeks ahead of Microsoft's internal timeline) with nearly 10,000 construction workers, and about 550 full-time staff now work on site^[1][2]
The first facility fulfils a $3.3 billion investment pledge; Microsoft added $4 billion in September 2025 for a second facility next door, due in 2028, taking its Wisconsin total past $7 billion, and says it will have spent $4.7 billion locally on construction between 2024 and 2028^[1][4]
WEC Energy Group, parent of We Energies, expects 2.6 gigawatts of new demand from Microsoft's buildout, and Wisconsin regulators approved tariffs in April 2026 making data centers pay the full cost of the energy infrastructure built for them^[2]
The village has approved site plans for up to 15 more Microsoft datacenters over the next decade^[3]

Notable features

A single cluster of NVIDIA GB200 servers in which each rack of 72 Blackwell GPUs works as one accelerator, with 1.8 terabytes of GPU-to-GPU bandwidth and 14 terabytes of pooled memory per rack; Microsoft quotes 865,000 tokens per second for each rack^[2][5]
The 315-acre site has three buildings with 1.2 million square feet under roof, built with 46.6 miles of deep foundation piles and 26.5 million pounds of structural steel^[5]
More than 90% of the facility uses closed-loop liquid cooling filled once during construction; the rest uses outside air, switching to water only on the hottest days^[4]
Microsoft says it pre-pays for its energy and grid infrastructure and matches its fossil-fuel power with carbon-free energy, including a 250 MW solar project in Portage County^[4]
