Embraer's pressurised 30-seat EMB 120 Brasilia turboprop prototype PT-ZBA flew for the first time in July 1983 at São José dos Campos, the airliner that opened the US commuter market to Embraer.

On 11 August 1995 Embraer's ERJ-145, a 50-seat regional jet with rear-mounted engines, flew for the first time at São José dos Campos with 18 firm orders, 16 options and 127 letters of intent.

The FAA issued the Embraer ERJ-145 its type certificate on 10 December 1996, eleven days after Brazil's CTA, and Continental Express took the first aircraft that month.

On 19 February 2002 the first Embraer 170, PP-XJE, took off from São José dos Campos, the maiden flight of the four-abreast E-Jet family that went on to take the 70-130 seat market.

Embraer's first E190, PP-XMA, flew on 12 March 2004 from São José dos Campos, starting the flight-test campaign for the 98-108 seat stretch that JetBlue launched.

On 17 March 2004 LOT Polish Airlines flew SP-LDA from Warsaw to Vienna, the first commercial flight of any Embraer E-Jet, after delivery on 8 March and certification delays.

Air Canada began flying the first Embraer E175, C-FEIQ, on 19 July 2005, according to Embraer, making the Canadian airline the launch operator of the stretched 76-to-78-seat E-Jet that became the dominant US regional jet.

Embraer unveiled its second-generation E-Jets, the E175-E2, E190-E2 and E195-E2, on 17 June 2013 with an investment of US$1.7 billion and orders for as many as 365 aircraft on day one.

The first E190-E2 took off from São José dos Campos at 1:06 p.m. on 23 May 2016 for a 3 h 20 min flight to Mach 0.82 and 41,000 ft, starting the certification campaign for the E2 family.

On 28 February 2018 Embraer's E190-E2 received its type certificate from ANAC, the FAA and EASA at once, 56 months after launch, clearing the first E2 for delivery to Widerøe.

On 4 April 2018 Embraer handed Widerøe the first production E190-E2, a 114-seat single-class aircraft, at São José dos Campos; the Norwegian carrier began flying it later that month.

On 12 September 2019 Embraer handed over its first E195-E2, its largest jet ever, to lessor AerCap for launch operator Azul, which configured it with 136 seats; certification had come in April.

On 25 April 2020 Boeing said it had ended its Master Transaction Agreement with Embraer after the 24 April initial termination date passed, killing a planned joint venture; Embraer rejected Boeing's reasons.
