NASA Is Getting Closer to Building An Ultra-Quiet Supersonic Jet for Passenger Flight

NASA is moving forward with their plans to create a quieter supersonic jet that can cut travel times in half. The quiet plane will fly up to 55,000 feet at supersonic speeds. The new prototype will run on two engines and in theory, it could cut the flight time from New York to Los Angeles in half from 6 to 3 hours.

Interesting Engineering (25 July 2017) reported NASA and Lockheed Martin moving their quiet supersonic demonstrator toward a bid stage after June 2017 wind tunnel tests^[1]
The cost to NASA was $390 million over five years, with the first year in the 2018 budget draft; six test flights over populated areas were planned from 2022^[1]
The aircraft, the X-59, made its first flight on 28 October 2025 from Lockheed Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale, California, flying 67 minutes to NASA Armstrong in Edwards, California^[4][5]
NASA test pilot Nils Larson flew to about 12,000 feet at about 230 mph with landing gear down, as planned; higher-altitude and supersonic test flights follow under the Quesst mission^[4]

Notable features

The design aims to reduce the sonic boom to a hum (Concorde's noise was 90 dBA); it flies up to 55,000 feet and could halve New York to Los Angeles from 6 to 3 hours^[1]
As built, the X-59 is 99.7 ft (30.4 m) long with a 29.5 ft (9.0 m) wingspan and a 32,300 lb maximum takeoff weight, powered by a single General Electric F414 engine giving 22,000 lbf with afterburner; the cockpit, ejection seat and canopy come from a Northrop T-38 and the landing gear from an F-16^[2]
Its long, narrow airframe and canards keep shock waves from coalescing; a 2018 projection put the ground thump at 75 EPNdB, about as loud as closing a car door, against 105-110 EPNdB for Concorde^[2]
It is designed to cruise at Mach 1.42 at 55,000 ft with a top speed of Mach 1.5; NASA says it first flew at those mission conditions, Mach 1.4 (about 924 mph) and 55,000 feet, on 12 June 2026, days after its first supersonic flight at Mach 1.1^[2][3]
The flush cockpit leaves the long nose blocking all forward vision, so the aircraft uses an enhanced flight vision system built around a forward 4K camera^[2]
