Mont Cenis Base Tunnel Opens
- The twin-tube base tunnel is the centrepiece of the 270 km Lyon–Turin line: 45 km runs under France and 12.5 km under Italy, slightly longer than Switzerland's Gotthard Base Tunnel.
- It cuts Lyon–Turin journeys from 3 h 47 min to 1 h 47 min, lets freight trains carry 2,000 tonnes instead of about 700, and raises long-distance services from 6 to 22 a day, aiming to take around a million heavy vehicles off Alpine roads each year.
